What is Podcasting? Could it be the latest and greatest on-the-go technology?

One of the main reasons for its popularity is it allows people to transfer their favorite audio to their portable media player and take it with them every where they go, whether it's school, work, or traveling. If there is a specific broadcast you enjoy, just subscribe to it and all the new shows are automatically downloaded to your computer. Next time you sync your media player your shows will be available for listening. If you have an idea, this is a great way for you to share it with the world; you have just entered a realm where everyone can have a voice. Now, if you're ever asked the question, "What is podcasting?" you can answer, "It's whatever you want it to be."

There are four steps to Podcasting:

  • The publishers, other internet users, create the content. Audio is the most common and it is typically in MP3 format. Once finished they post it to a web server.
  • Publish an RRS file, or newsfeed, containing an RRS news item referencing the content. Each item supplies meta information about the file, such as name and a short description, and also a URL of the audio file.
  • Users then check for new versions of the newsfeed, using Podcasting software. If a new version is found the software reads it, identifies the URL then downloads to the media player.
  • Now you can listen to what is termed a "podcasted" audio file at your convenience.

Since 2004 podcasting has exploded. In the beginning, if you Googled the term "podcasting" you may have received 6000 hits. Today, that same keyword will get you over 35 million hits. This new technology has somehow taken on a life of its own.
