A 'Catch All Email Facility' where "nobody's" mail goes.

Have you ever misspelled an email address only to realize you did it after you hit the send button? Where does it go, since you know it isn't going to the person you intended it for. Sometimes a catch all' email facility is where this mail will be going. Contrary to what some think, a misspelled email does not just float around in cyber space, it has to go somewhere.

There is another aspect to catch all email. When you sign up with a website hosting service provider you are issued an email address, (yourname@domain.com). Even though your email is sent to you it still needs a place to go after it leaves the sender. Since you are essentially a resident of your host's server, all email with that domain goes into what is called a 'catch all' mailbox. If you are using Outlook Express or Eudora you then configure them to retrieve your email messages off of your host's server, they will then be dumped into your default folder. POP3 is the method that allows this to be possible.

If you own your own domain name 'catch all' is very similar to the above. For instance, if you have a lot of people that say your name wrong, spell your name wrong, or just don't care about either, all the email they send will go directly into what you have set up to be your 'catch all' or default email account. That is of course, they managed to at least spell your domain name properly. Everything that comes addressed to your domain will directly go into your catch all.

The one big downside to enabling your email to 'catch all' is spammers. When spammers send out their latest pile of trash they, like all your relevant email will end up in your default account since all the information they need is your domain name. If you find you are getting too much junk mail you can always disable the 'catch all' feature. You can also use Hotmail or Gmail. They are at present (2007) the only ones that offer 99% perfect spamfilters, but your email will reside on a server on the internet rather than on your computer. You decide what you prefer!
