Domain Extension, Which one is at the end of your name?
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers announced new domains in late 2000. They were .biz, .coop, .museum, .name, .aero, .pro, .info. In 2005, .mobi was released. Prior to these releases, no new domains had been created since 1989.
Today, there are literally hundreds of extensions available. There are country code domain extensions which are two letters long. An example is .uk for United Kingdom. The generic extensions are three letters long and are broken up into categories of organizations. For the most part they are open to the public, but there are some that are not, they are limited to whatever the domain extension stands for.
Here is a list of some domain extensions and what they stand for.
- .com - commercial, is open for any person or entity to register.
- .net - network, open for any person or entity to register.
- .org - organization, open for any person or entity to register.
- .biz - business, it is open for any person or entity. However, the registration may be challenged at a later date if it is not in accordance with the domains charter.
- .info - information, is open to any person or entity to register.
- .us - United States of America, it is commonly used by local and state government instead of .gov
- .tv - Tuvalu, these are also sold as advertising domains.
- .ws - Samoa, it is formerly Western Samoa.
- .name - individuals by name, is open for any person or entity to register. The registrants may be challenged later if they are not individuals in accordance with domain charter.
- .mobi - mobile devices, this domain must be used for mobile compatible sites in accordance with standards.
- .jobs - companies, this domain extension is designed for companies with jobs to advertise. No posting of third party employers is permitted at this time.
- .uk - United Kingdom.
- .nz - New Zealand.
- .cn - People's Republic of China, this domain is Mainland China only.
- .tw - Taiwan, Republic of China, this domain is used in the Republic of China, namely Penghu, Kinmen, Mastu, and Taiwan.
- .jp - Japan.
- .be - Belgium.
- .at - Austria.
- .eu - European Union, this domain extension is restricted to individuals and companies in the European Union.
- .fm - Federated States of Micronesia, some radio related websites outside of Micronesia use this extension.
- .ms - Montserrat.
- .nu - Niue, this one is commonly used for Dutch and Swedish websites.
- .tc - Turks and Caicos Islands.
- .vg - British Virgin Islands.
